Admission Alert: IISER Pune PhD 2025
IISER Pune invites applications for PhD admissions in multiple disciplines for the session starting August 2025. The programme offers an opportunity to pursue advanced research in Chemistry, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Humanities & Social Sciences, with faculty engaged in cutting-edge interdisciplinary work.
PhD Programme in Chemistry
Eligibility:
- Minimum 60% aggregate marks (or 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale) in a Master’s degree in any branch of Science (Chemistry/Physics/Mathematics/Biology) or equivalent.
- Candidates with Integrated BS-MS, BE, BTech, BPharm, ME, MTech, or MPharm meeting the above criteria can apply.
- Must have qualified at least one of the following national-level exams: CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, GATE, DBT-JRF, or an IISER BS-MS degree with CGPA ≥ 8.0.
PhD Programme in Data Science
Eligibility:
- Minimum 60% aggregate marks (or 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale) in a Master’s or four-year Bachelor’s degree (BE, BTech, BS) in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or any science/engineering subject.
- Must have qualified at least one of the following: CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, DBT-JRF, JEST, NBHM, GATE, JGEEBILS, or an INSPIRE-PhD fellowship.
- Research areas include AI/ML in healthcare, computational finance, climate modeling, bioinformatics, and more.
PhD Programme in Mathematics
Eligibility:
- Minimum 60% aggregate marks (or 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale) in a Master’s degree or BE/BTech in relevant fields.
- Must satisfy at least one of:
- NBHM PhD written exam (2025) and shortlisted for NBHM Doctoral Interview
- Valid CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF in Mathematics or Computer Science
- GATE rank up to 40 (General) or 50 (Reserved Categories)
- Integrated BS-MS, MS (or MSc) from IISERs/IITs/IISc with CGPA ≥ 8.0
- Selection includes a two-stage written exam followed by an interview.
PhD Programme in Physics
Eligibility:
- Minimum 60% aggregate marks (or 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale) in MSc or four-year BE/BTech/BS.
- Must satisfy at least one of:
- Valid CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF score
- Rank ≤ 500 in GATE or JEST PhD Physics (625 for reserved categories)
- INSPIRE-PhD fellowship
- IISER BS-MS or an INI institution Master’s degree with CGPA ≥ 8.0
- Selection includes shortlisting and in-person interviews.
PhD Programme in Humanities & Social Sciences
Eligibility:
- Minimum 60% aggregate marks (or 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale) in MA/MSc/MPhil/BS-MS in Sciences, Social Sciences, English, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Fine Arts, or related fields.
- Candidates from Architecture, Engineering, and Medicine can apply with a four-year Bachelor’s degree.
- Must have qualified at least one of: CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, NBHM, or GATE.
- Selection is based on a two-page research proposal and interview.
Selection Process:
- Shortlisted candidates will be notified via email for interviews (in-person or online as per discipline).
- Shortlisting does not guarantee admission; additional criteria may be applied.
IISER Pune PhD 2025 Deadlines:
- March 1, 2025: Applications open
- March 26, 2025 (5:00 PM IST): Last date for Mathematics & Data Science applications
- April 20, 2025 (5:00 PM IST): Last date for Chemistry applications
- May 12 – June 6, 2025: PhD interviews (varies by department)
- July 2025: Tentative announcement of selected candidates
