Ph.D. PROGRAM IN BIOTECHNOLOGY (2025-26)
Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU), established by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of Gujarat, is India’s first Biotechnology University focused on innovation and translational research. In collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, GBU offers postgraduate (PG) and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in Biotechnology. The university aims to develop professionals capable of conducting globally competitive research to address societal challenges.
Applications are invited for admission to the Gujarat Biotechnology University PhD 2025-26 SESSION from candidates with strong academic records, motivation, and passion for research.
Ph.D. Program Specializations
GBU offers interdisciplinary Ph.D. research opportunities in:
- Animal Biotechnology
- Environmental Biotechnology
- Industrial Biotechnology
- Medical Biotechnology
- Plant Biotechnology
Students admitted to the Ph.D. program must complete six months of coursework covering research methodology and advanced biotechnology techniques.
Ph.D. Admission Categories
Ph.D. admissions are available under the following categories:
GBU Fellowship – Two seats are available under this category, with a fellowship of ₹20,000 per month for five years.
Own Fellowship – Thirty seats are available, including those for candidates with fellowships from government agencies such as CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR, DST, and ICAR. GBU is not responsible for providing financial support beyond the candidate’s existing fellowship.
Project Staff – Candidates working on GBU-sponsored research projects are eligible to apply. They must work full-time on their Ph.D. research. GBU does not provide financial support beyond project funding.
Eligibility
Candidates must have completed M.Sc./M.Tech or an equivalent Master’s degree from a recognized university. A minimum of 55% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade) is required. A 5% relaxation (to 50%) is given for SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), PwD, and EWS candidates as per UGC norms.
Selection Procedure
An entrance test will be conducted at GBU, and candidates qualifying for the test will be called for an interview. Final selection will be based on interview performance.
Candidates with JRF from UGC, CSIR, ICMR, DBT, DST, ICAR, or equivalent agencies are exempted from the entrance exam and can directly appear for the interview. GBU Project Fellows with national or state-level eligibility test qualifications (UGC/CSIR-NET-LS, DBT, GATE, GSET) can also appear directly for the interview upon PI recommendation.
GBU offers only full-time Ph.D. programs. The list of selected candidates will be published on the GBU website. Providing false information at any stage will lead to disqualification.
Reservation Policy
Reservation of seats will be as per the Government of Gujarat rules.
Application Procedure
Applications must be submitted online. The last date for submission for the Gujarat Biotechnology University PhD 2025-26 admissions is April 5, 2025. Incomplete applications will be rejected.
