Who is an Air Force Pilot?
An Air Force pilot is a highly trained defense personnel responsible for flying combat and transport aircraft as part of military operations. These officers are at the frontline of national defense and are often entrusted with life-critical decisions during both wartime and peacekeeping missions.

Skills Required to Become an Air Force Pilot

How Does One Get There?
Different routes to become an air force pilot.
There are three main pathways to becoming a pilot in the Indian Air Force:
1. Through NDA (National Defence Academy) Entry:
- Eligibility: Male candidates aged 16.5 to 19.5 years who have passed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics.
- Selection Process: UPSC conducts a written exam, followed by SSB interview, medical test, and a pilot aptitude battery test (CPSS).
- Training: Candidates undergo three years of training at NDA (Khadakwasla) followed by specialized flying training at the Air Force Academy (Dundigal).
2. Through CDSE (Combined Defence Services Examination):
- Eligibility: Graduate in any discipline with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level. Only male candidates aged 20 to 24 years can apply.
- Selection Process: UPSC written exam, followed by SSB interview, medical test, and CPSS.
- Entry into: Air Force Academy (AFA) Hyderabad via Permanent Commission (PC).
3. Through AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test):
- Eligibility: Graduates (minimum 60%) in any discipline with Physics and Mathematics in 10+2 or B.E./B.Tech. Age: 20 to 24 years.
- Selection Process: AFCAT written test, followed by SSB interview, CPSS, and medicals.
- Entry into: Short Service Commission (SSC) Flying Branch (valid for 14 years).
All selected candidates are required to clear the CPSS (Computerised Pilot Selection System) test—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Failing it permanently disqualifies a candidate from flying branch selection.
Additional Path: NCC Special Entry
- Eligibility: NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ Certificate holders with a minimum of ‘B’ grade and 60% marks in graduation (with PCM in 12th).
- No written test required; direct SSB call.
Prospects
An Air Force pilot enjoys immense respect, prestige, and personal fulfillment. Apart from a starting salary of ₹56,100 per month (Level 10 pay matrix), pilots receive allowances such as flying pay, military service pay, dearness allowance, and uniform grant. The total monthly compensation may exceed ₹1 lakh at the entry level.
