Admission Alert: Madras School of Economics PhD 2025-26

The Madras School of Economics (MSE), recognized as an Institution of Special Importance by the Government of Tamil Nadu and included by UGC under the State Legislature Act, invites applications for its Full-Time and Part-Time Ph.D. Program in Economics for the Academic Year 2025-26. The degree will be awarded under the Madras School of Economics’ degree-granting authority as per the MSE Act, 2020.

Interested candidates from Economics and allied disciplines, including Finance, Management Science, and STEM backgrounds, are encouraged to apply. Eligible candidates from non-Economics disciplines may also be considered for interdisciplinary Ph.D. admissions.

Eligibility

Educational Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Economics, Finance, Management Science, or STEM disciplines from UGC/AICTE-approved institutions or equivalent foreign institutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders in professional courses listed in Ordinance-3 are also eligible.

Minimum Marks Requirement

  • At least 55% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade).
  • Relaxation: 5% relaxation (i.e., 50% marks) for SC/ST/MBC/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled candidates, based only on qualifying marks without grace marks.

Qualifying Entrance Tests

  • Preferred: Valid scores in UGC-JRF/NET/Ph.D., GATE, State-level SET, or CAT (within the last three years).
  • Candidates without a valid entrance exam score must appear for a written test at MSE.

Special Note for Part-Time Applicants

  • Selected candidates must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer. The NOC format will be shared after the selection announcement.

Admission Procedure

Application Process

  • Fill out the prescribed application form.
  • Upload scanned copies of required documents (attested by Gazetted Officer or Notary Public).
  • Email the completed form and documents to [email protected].

Selection Process

  • Candidates are shortlisted based on academic records and entrance exam scores.
  • Candidates without qualifying entrance scores must appear for the MSE Written Test.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview.
  • Final selection is based on the interview score (minimum qualifying score: 50%).

Written Test Details

(for candidates without qualifying exams)

  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Sections:
    • Quantitative Methods: Mathematical Methods, Operations Research, Statistics, Econometrics.
    • Economics: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Indian Economy (UGC-NET syllabus emphasis).
  • Format: Two questions (15 marks each).

Interview Details

  • Conducted online by MSE faculty.
  • Will cover:
    • Master’s coursework
    • Written test subjects
    • Master’s dissertation (if applicable)
    • Research interests in SOP

Research Fellowship and Scholarships

  • Candidates with UGC-JRF are eligible for fellowship as per UGC rules.
  • Other meritorious candidates may be considered for:
    • Dr. Devaki Muthiah & Dr. A.C. Muthiah Research Scholarship
    • MSE Institutional Fellowship
  • Scholarships are awarded for three years (extendable by one year based on performance).

Fee Structure

  • Fee per Semester: INR 8,000 (includes infrastructural support).
  • SC/ST Candidates: 50% fee exemption.
  • Same fee applies for Full-Time, Part-Time, Fellowship holders, and Non-Stipendiary scholars.
