What is PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme?
Launched in November 2024, the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme is a Central Sector Scheme aimed at ensuring no student is deprived of higher education due to financial constraints. It provides collateral-free, guarantor-free education loans up to ₹10 lakhs, with additional interest subvention benefits for eligible students. Who Can Avail the Scheme?
All students who:
- Have secured admission to one of the approved 860 Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs) in India.
- Have applied through merit (not through management quota).
- Are pursuing any undergraduate, postgraduate, or diploma course.
- Have not availed any other Central/State scholarship or education loan subsidy.
No upper income limit for availing the loan.
Interest subvention applies only for students with family income up to ₹8 lakhs/year.
Benefits of the Scheme
- Collateral-Free Loans:
- No guarantor or security required.
- Full course fees, hostel/mess charges, laptop, living expenses, etc., covered.
- Interest Subvention:
- 3% interest relief during moratorium (course + 1 year) for incomes up to ₹8 lakhs.
- Up to ₹10 lakhs principal eligible for subvention.
- Students with income ≤ ₹4.5 lakhs also eligible under PM-USP CSIS for 100% interest subvention.
- Credit Guarantee:
- 75% coverage of defaulted amount for loans up to ₹7.5 lakhs.

How to Apply
For the PM Vidyalaxmi Education Loan Scheme
- Visit the official portal: https://pmvidyalaxmi.co.in
- Fill in the digital education loan application form (2-page format).
- Upload necessary documents:
- Aadhaar, PAN, Address Proof
- Previous exam mark sheets
- Admission letter & fee structure
- Income certificate from authorized state authority
- Once loan is sanctioned by bank, portal will update your status.
- If eligible, you will be informed to apply for interest subvention separately.
Disbursement & Repayment
- Loan is disbursed directly by banks to the student or institution.
- Moratorium period: Course duration + 1 year.
- After moratorium, repayment begins for both principal and remaining interest.
- Interest subsidy is transferred via:
- PM Vidyalaxmi Digital Rupee App (CBDC Wallet or e-voucher)
- Must redeem subsidy within 3 months or it will lapse.
List of Participating Institutions (QHEIs)
The PM Vidyalaxmi Education Loan Scheme is valid only for admissions to the 860 Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs), which include:
- Top 100 NIRF ranked institutions (overall/domain-specific/category)
- Top 200 state-government HEIs in NIRF
- All remaining central government HEIs
Examples:
- IITs, IIMs, NITs
- Central Universities
- NAAC/NBA-accredited state universities
- Top-ranked private universities as per NIRF
(Note: Foreign universities and their Indian campuses are not included)
Priority Criteria for 3% Interest Subvention (if oversubscribed)
If applications exceed the 1 lakh annual cap, students are selected using these criteria:
- Admission in Govt HEIs
- Technical/professional courses
- Govt school (Class 12 and 10) pass-outs
- Rural background
- Female students
- Lower-income families
Slots are distributed state-wise as per youth population (18–23 age group). For example, Uttar Pradesh has 18,895 slots, Maharashtra 8,512, Tamil Nadu 4,590 etc.
Important Do’s and Don’ts
Do’s:
- Apply only via the official portal
- Submit accurate income certificates
- Follow up via the student dashboard on the portal
- Use the official PM Vidyalaxmi Digital Rupee App for interest subsidy redemption
Don’ts:
- Don’t pay any amount or scan unofficial QR codes
- Don’t fall for scam websites or apps mimicking the portal
- Don’t submit forged documents – this will lead to blacklisting and penalties
