The National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, was established in 1977 through the merger of the National Institute of Health Administration and Education (NIHAE) and the National Institute of Family Planning (NIFP). It serves as an apex technical institute and think tank for health and family welfare programmes. The NIHFW is affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for its Ph.D. programme and works in diverse areas such as public health, epidemiology, health management, reproductive bio-medicine, health communication, and health policy.
Ph.D. programme details
The Ph.D. (Public Health) programme is jointly awarded by NIHFW and JNU. It is a full-time research programme emphasizing multidisciplinary approaches to public health issues, health systems management, epidemiology, digital health, health economics, climate change, biotechnology, and related fields. Coursework, synopsis preparation, and research are integral components. Students may pursue topics relevant to NIHFW’s research domains and may undertake research as part of ongoing projects with faculty mentorship.
Eligibility
- Educational qualifications: Master’s degree in relevant fields such as MBBS, MD, MDS, MSc (Nursing), M.Phil, M.Pharma, MPH, MBA, MA/MSc (Mathematics/Statistics/Operations Research), Epidemiology, Population Studies, Demography, Economics/Health Economics, Communication/Journalism, Education, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or allied subjects. Master’s in AYUSH systems of medicine is also eligible.
- Marks requirement: Minimum 55% aggregate (General category) in Master’s degree; minimum 75% aggregate for candidates with 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree. Relaxations as per UGC regulations for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/PWD/EWS.
- Entrance qualification: Must have qualified UGC-NET (category 1/2/3), CSIR-NET, ICMR, AYUSH, or DBT examinations (results declared after June 2024). JRF certificate validity must be ensured at document verification.
- Candidates appearing in the final qualifying examination may apply, subject to fulfilling eligibility before admission confirmation.
Selection process
- Screening of applications based on eligibility and NET score.
- Shortlisted candidates will present a tentative research proposal/synopsis and attend an interview/viva-voce.
- Final merit list will consider NET scores and interview performance (weightage as per category).
- Admission is subject to verification of documents, seat blocking by fee payment, and completion of coursework.

- Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PWD as per Government of India norms.
