Departments & Schools for IIT BHU PhD Admission 2025-26
Ph.D. admissions are open in ten Engineering Departments, three Science Departments, one Department of Humanistic Studies, and three Interdisciplinary Schools. A complete list of disciplines, allied disciplines, and research areas is provided in the brochure (Annexure I).
Categories of Registration
Candidates may apply under the following categories:
- Full-Time Regular Registration (with Institute Assistantship or National Fellowship)
- Full-Time External Registration – for candidates employed in recognized R&D organizations or industries.
- Full-Time Sponsored Registration – for candidates sponsored by educational institutions, R&D organizations, or industries.
- Part-Time Registration – available for internal, external, institute project, and executive categories (for working professionals, faculty, or research staff).
- Special Sponsored Seats under:
- Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth (Ministry of Ayush)
- Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH)
- National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG)
Minimum Qualification
Ph.D. in Engineering
- Master’s in Engineering/Technology in relevant or allied discipline with 60% marks or 6.0 CPI, or
- Bachelor’s in Engineering with 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (70%/7.0 CPI for those with ≥2 years’ professional experience from Central Government-funded institutions).
Ph.D. in Sciences
- Master’s degree in the relevant discipline with 60% marks or 6.0 CPI, or
- 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Science with 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (70%/7.0 CPI with ≥2 years’ experience).
Ph.D. in Pharmacy, Humanistic Studies, Architecture, Planning & Design, and Interdisciplinary Areas
- Eligibility as per the specific discipline outlined in the brochure, generally requiring a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI in the qualifying degree.
Financial Assistance
Full-time Ph.D. scholars are eligible for Institute Assistantships of Rs. 37,000 per month, subject to qualifying GATE/GPAT/UGC-CSIR-NET (JRF/LS) as applicable. Assistantships are renewable each semester based on satisfactory academic and research performance. Candidates with valid National Fellowships (CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR/DST-INSPIRE, etc.) may also apply directly.
Selection Procedure
- Admission will be based on a written test and/or interview conducted by the respective Departments/Schools.
- Candidates in certain categories (e.g., sponsored, external, national fellowship holders, MoRTH/NMCG/AAyush nominees, IIT graduates with CPI ≥8.0) are exempted from the written test.
- Final selection will depend on academic credentials, test/interview performance, and availability of assistantships.
- A relaxation of 5% marks or 0.5 CPI is applicable to SC/ST candidates.
Reservation Policy
Reservations are applicable as per Government of India norms:
SC – 15%, ST – 7.5%, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) – 27%, EWS – 10%, and 5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates. Valid certificates must be presented at the time of interview.
Admission for Foreign Nationals / INRA
Applications are invited from foreign nationals and Indian Nationals Residing Abroad (INRA) with qualifications equivalent to the Indian system and valid GRE/TOEFL/IELTS scores. ICCR-sponsored candidates may also apply.

- Hostel accommodation will be provided subject to availability.
