ADMISSION ALERT: MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.) IN MATHEMATICS – AUTUMN 2025
IISER Kolkata invites applications from highly motivated candidates for admission into the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Mathematics program for the Autumn Semester 2025. This is a two-year postgraduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge in mathematics through rigorous coursework and research exposure.
Eligibility
- Candidates must hold a B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognized University/Institute with Mathematics as a subject.
- Those appearing for their final-year undergraduate exams may also apply, provided they meet the minimum marks criteria by the time of admission.
Minimum Qualifying Marks
- General/OBC candidates: 55% aggregate or equivalent grade.
- SC/ST candidates: 50% aggregate, as per the Government of India’s reservation norms.
- Candidates must submit their final degree mark sheet within 60 days of admission. Failure to meet the minimum required marks will lead to cancellation of admission.
Note: JAM-Mathematics is not required for this M.Sc. admission.
Reservation Policy
- Admissions will be conducted as per the Government of India’s reservation norms for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD categories.
Selection Process
- Candidates must qualify through the M.Sc. Mathematics Entrance Test conducted by IISER Kolkata.
- The entrance test will be subjective in nature and of 3 hours duration.
- The syllabus covers topics in Analysis, Algebra, Linear Algebra, and Set Theory (detailed syllabus provided below).
- The list of shortlisted candidates for the entrance test will be published on the IISER Kolkata website.
- The final selection list will be based on entrance test performance and fulfillment of eligibility criteria.

How to Apply
- Candidates must apply online through the application portal.
- The application form should be filled carefully as per the instructions provided.
- After submission, candidates should download and print a copy of the application for future reference.
Documents Required
For Entrance Test
- Hard copy of the submitted application form.
- Valid photo ID proof (Aadhaar card/Voter ID).
At the Time of Admission
- Self-attested copies of mark sheets & certificates (starting from the secondary level).
- Original and photocopy of a valid photo ID.
- Proof of Date of Birth.
Syllabus for Entrance Test
- Analysis: Sequences, series, continuity, differentiability, functions of real variables, improper integrals, metric spaces, Riemann integration.
- Algebra:
- Set Theory: Basics of sets, relations, functions, countable and uncountable sets.
- Group Theory: Groups, subgroups, cyclic groups, homomorphisms, Lagrange’s theorem, permutation groups, normal subgroups, quotient groups, isomorphism theorems.
- Linear Algebra: Vector spaces, subspaces, linear independence, matrices, rank-nullity theorem, linear transformations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, diagonalizability, inner product spaces.
