NIMHANS PhD Admission 2025-26 January Session, Eligibility, Entrance Test Dates
National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bengaluru has invited applications for Ph.D. Programmes (External Funding Category) for the January 2026 Session for the Academic Year 2025-26. The session will commence from January 2026. The institute offers Ph.D. programmes across multiple departments in Mental Health and Neurosciences. Selection will be based on an Entrance Test followed by an Interview. Applicants must ensure they meet eligibility requirements and follow the application process within the specified timeline.
Admission is offered only under External Fellowship/Sponsored/Project-funded categories. The Entrance examination will be conducted in Bengaluru.

Eligibility
Applicants should possess the qualifying degree as specified for each programme from a recognised university. A minimum of 55 percent marks is required, with a 5 percent relaxation for SC, ST and PwBD categories. Candidates awaiting results may also apply but must submit proof of passing before admission. Selection is open only for those with external fellowships like UGC, CSIR, ICMR, DBT, DST, AYUSH JRF or SRF, sponsored candidates from government institutions, or candidates working in funded research projects at NIMHANS.
Age Limit
For External Fellowship and Project-funded candidates – upper age limit 40 years as on date of commencement.
For Sponsored/Deputed candidates and permanent NIMHANS staff – upper age limit 42 years.
PwBD candidates are eligible for relaxation as per rules.
Entrance Test Pattern
Mode – Offline at NIMHANS Bengaluru only
Total Questions – 100
Duration – 90 minutes
Marking – 1 mark for correct answer, minus 0.25 for each wrong answer
Minimum Qualifying Marks – 50 percent (45 percent for PwBD)
Selection Criteria
Entrance Test – 70 percent weightage
Interview – 30 percent weightage
Final selection is subject to availability of eligible guides and facilities in the concerned department.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted online only through the link available on NIMHANS website. All supporting documents must be uploaded. Candidates can apply for a maximum of three eligible courses. Employees of government institutions must upload No Objection Certificate.

Total Fee at Admission – Rs 32,000 per annum excluding hostel charges
Important Notes For NIMHANS PhD Admissions
Admission is strictly full-time. Private practice or other courses are not permitted without approval. Hostel accommodation is subject to availability. All candidates must register for Anti-Ragging formalities and submit medical fitness certificate.
