About SBI PO
State Bank of India (SBI) conducts the Probationary Officer (PO) recruitment every year for the post of Officer Scale-I across its branches. SBI PO is one of the most popular banking jobs in India due to its job security and attractive salary. After Civil Services it is perhaps the most sought after job in India, though it is technically not a government job but still it provides many facility similar to a government job.
Eligibility for Prelims Exam
Nationality:
Only Indian citizens are eligible and Persons of Indian Origin, subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1962 with the intention of permanent settlement are also eligible, subject to proper certification.
Educational Qualification:
Graduation in any discipline from a recognized university. Candidates appearing in their final year can also apply, provided they submit proof of passing before the date specified by SBI. (You will find it in their latest advertisement every year)
Age Limit:
21 to 30 years for the General Category as on the specified cut-off date.
Age relaxations apply for reserved categories as follows:
- SC/ST: 5 years
- OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
- PWD: 10 to 15 years (depending on category)
- Ex-servicemen, Jammu & Kashmir migrants, and others: 5 years
Number of Attempts Allowed for Specific Categories:
- General: 4 attempts
- OBC/PWD OBC: 7 attempts
- SC/ST/PWD: No limit
Annoucement Advertisement & Exam Timeline
SBI PO recruitment notification is usually released in December every year (as per the last exam cycle, do check the website for the latest update). The online application process begins shortly after the notification. Preliminary exams are typically conducted in February-March, while the Main exams are held around April-May. Psychometric tests & Group Discussions and Interviews follow the mains result.
Reservation and Relaxation
Reservation is provided as per Government of India guidelines. The breakup is:
SC: 15%
ST: 7.5%
OBC: 27%
PWD: 3% (across multiple categories)
Eligible PWD candidates are provided with compensatory time and the facility to use a scribe during the examination.
SBI PO Selection Procedure
The SBI PO selection process consists of three stages:
Preliminary Examination
The prelims exam is conducted online with objective-type questions. It includes:
English Language: 30 questions
Quantitative Aptitude: 35 questions
Reasoning Ability: 35 questions
Total Duration: 60 minutes
Negative marking: 0.25 marks for every wrong answer
There is no sectional cut-off but candidates must clear the overall cut-off.
Main Examination
The main exam consists of both objective and descriptive tests.
Objective Test (200 Marks, 3 hours):
Reasoning & Computer Aptitude: 40 questions (60 marks, 50 minutes)
Data Analysis & Interpretation: 30 questions (60 marks, 45 minutes)
General/Economy/Banking Awareness: 50 questions (60 marks, 45 minutes)
English Language: 35 questions (40 marks, 40 minutes)
Descriptive Test (50 Marks, 30 minutes):
Essay and letter writing in English
Group Exercises & Interview
Candidates shortlisted after the main examination are called for Group Exercises, Interviews, and sometimes Psychometric Tests are also part of the SBI PO Selection Process. This final stage carries 50 marks.

Quantitative Aptitude: Simplification, number systems, ratio & proportion, profit & loss, percentages, time & work, time & distance, mixtures & alligations, data interpretation, number series, mensuration, probability, permutation & combination, interests (SI & CI)
Reasoning Ability: Seating arrangement, puzzles, coding-decoding, syllogisms, input-output, inequalities, blood relations, direction sense, ranking, data sufficiency
Main Exam Syllabus
Reasoning & Computer Aptitude: Advanced puzzles, data sufficiency, coding-decoding, logical reasoning, basic computer knowledge, MS Office, basic networking, abbreviations
Data Analysis & Interpretation: Tables, line graphs, bar graphs, pie charts, radar charts, missing data, caselets, probability, data sufficiency
General/Economy/Banking Awareness: Current affairs, static GK, banking and financial awareness, insurance, important business/economic terms
English Language: Reading comprehension, cloze test, para jumbles, grammar, vocabulary, error spotting, sentence correction, essay writing, letter writing
Application Process
Candidates need to regularly check the official SBI Careers website for the latest notifications. Once the notification is out, the following steps are to be followed:
- Online registration by filling in personal, academic, and other details
- Uploading scanned documents like photograph, signature, and category certificates
- Online payment of application fee
- Downloading and printing the confirmation page after submission
- Downloading admit cards for each phase (Prelims, Mains, Interview)
- Document verification at various stages of selection
Career Path After Selection
Selected candidates join SBI as Probationary Officers and enter the Scale-I Officer cadre. They undergo a probation period of 1-2 years during which they get exposure to multiple banking functions like operations, customer service, credit, loans, foreign exchange, and more.
After probation, officers are confirmed and eligible for regular promotions based on departmental exams, performance, and seniority. Career growth can take them to higher managerial and executive positions such as:

- Chief Manager
- Assistant General Manager
- Deputy General Manager
- General Manager
- Chief General Manager and above
