SINP is a premier national research institute engaged in advanced research and training in Physical and Biophysical Sciences. It offers Ph.D. programmes in association with the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be university under the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India.
Programmes Offered
Saha Institute PhD Program 2025 – August 2025 Session
Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. programme in the following two schools:
School of Physical Sciences
Areas:
- Nuclear, High Energy, and Condensed Matter Physics
- Theoretical and Computational Physics
- Materials Science, Quantum Information, Cosmology, etc.
School of Biophysical Sciences
Areas:
- Molecular & Cellular Biology
- Structural Biology
- Chemical Biology, Biophysics, etc.
Number of Fellowships Available:
25 (approx.) for all categories combined
Eligibility
For Physical Sciences:
- M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics with at least 55% marks
- Qualification in any one of the following national level tests:
- CSIR-UGC NET (JRF)
- GATE (2023/2024/2025)
- JEST 2025
- INSPIRE Fellowship (Provisional Certificate required)
For Biophysical Sciences:
- M.Sc. in any branch of Life Sciences / Chemistry / Physics
- At least 55% marks
- Qualified in one of the following:
- CSIR-UGC NET (JRF)
- DBT-JRF (Category-I)
- ICMR-JRF
- GATE (2023/2024/2025)
- INSPIRE Fellowship
Final-year M.Sc. students may apply but must produce results by August 31, 2025.
Selection Procedure
For the Saha Institute PhD Program 2025
- Shortlisting based on academic performance and national exam scores
- Interview at SINP Kolkata: Tentatively in July 2025
- Final selection based on interview performance
- Selected candidates will be admitted under HBNI and awarded Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) as per DAE norms

Fellowship & Financial Support
