About the Institute

The National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan), abbreviated as NIEPID, is a premier institution under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India. Located in Manovikas Nagar, Secunderabad, NIEPID functions as an apex body for education, research, and training related to intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is affiliated with Osmania University and recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).


About the Course

The M.Ed. in Special Education (Intellectual Disability) is a two-year postgraduate professional course designed to train specialists in the field of special education. The programme is in accordance with NCTE norms and approved by RCI, aiming to prepare master trainers, educators, researchers, and school administrators in the special education sector.

With the implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the demand for qualified special educators has grown. This course plays a vital role in preparing professionals capable of contributing to inclusive education, curriculum development, and capacity-building in special education institutions.


Objectives

Graduates of the M.Ed. Special Education (ID) programme will be able to:

  1. Serve as faculty members in teacher training programmes.
  2. Conduct research in special education and disability rehabilitation.
  3. Design and implement educational programmes for inclusive and special schools.
  4. Function as administrators and program heads in special education institutions.
  5. Develop specialized curricula tailored for various learning needs.

Eligibility

Candidates may apply under any of the following categories:

  • A. B.Ed. Special Education (ID) with minimum 50% marks from a UGC-recognized and RCI-approved university.
  • B. B.Ed. General with a Diploma in Special Education (ID), both with minimum 50% marks, and recognized by RCI.
  • C. B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. with a 4-year Integrated B.Ed. Special Education (ID) approved by RCI.
  • D. Final-year students of B.Ed. (meeting above criteria) may apply provisionally, but must submit certificates at the time of counselling.

Note: Candidates with a B.Ed. in a specific specialization may apply for the M.Ed. multi-category course. However, B.Ed. multi-category graduates are not eligible for M.Ed. specialization in a single disability category.

  • 2 Years (Four Semesters)

  • 25 Seats + 2 EWS (Economically Weaker Section)

Approximate Fees

  • General/OBC: Rs. 1,500 (Application Fee)
  • SC/ST/PwD: Rs. 1,100 (Application Fee)
  • Late Fee (All Categories): Rs. 200
    Other academic and hostel fees are not specified and may be obtained from the institute during counselling.

Admission Cycle (Approximate)

For the academic year 2025–26:

  • Applications Open: 15 May
  • Last Date to Apply: 25 June
  • Last Date with Late Fee: 30 June
  • Entrance Exam (Tentative): 27 July
