India Today-MDRA Best Colleges of India 2025, Key Findings

India Today magazine, in collaboration with MDRA, has released its Best Colleges of India 2025 survey — offering what is considered one of the most comprehensive mappings of top colleges across 14 major streams: Arts, Science, Commerce, Medical, Dental, Engineering, Architecture, Law, Mass Communication, Hotel Management, Business Administration (BBA), Computer Applications (BCA), Social Work, and Fashion Design.

Now in its 29th edition, the survey has built a strong reputation as a reference point for students, parents, educators, and recruiters alike — helping aspirants choose the best educational institutions.

Short Analysis of India Today-MDRA Best Colleges of India 2025

This year’s survey highlights that participation among colleges is steadily increasing — growing from 988 colleges in 2018 to 1,865 in 2025 — and the survey continues to evolve to reflect current trends and employability needs.

While the top Delhi-based colleges continue to dominate in many streams (such as AIIMS, SRCC, Hindu College), the introduction of categories like Most Improved Colleges now brings much-needed recognition to institutions making measurable progress, rather than just established legacy players.

The report also focuses on important real-world outcomes — such as career progression, placements, and return on investment — helping students and families look beyond prestige and focus on value and quality.

It’s worth noting that the education landscape is also responding to India’s growing youth demographic — with just 10% of India’s 18–23 age group currently in higher education, the sector has considerable room to expand.

How the Survey Was Conducted

The India Today-MDRA Best Colleges 2025 Survey was conducted across 14 major streams with participation from 1,865 colleges across the country.

The methodology involved:

  • Detailed objective data collection from eligible colleges
  • Inputs from over 10,000 institutions, of which the final verified participants were evaluated
  • A perceptual survey conducted across 27 cities among senior faculty, professionals, recruiters, and students
  • Final scores computed with 60:40 weightage between objective and perceptual parameters (for most streams), and 50:50 for niche streams such as Social Work and Fashion Design

Key evaluation parameters included:

  1. Intake Quality & Governance
  2. Academic Excellence
  3. Infrastructure & Living Experience
  4. Personality & Leadership Development
  5. Career Progression & Placement

The survey was designed to capture not just brand reputation but also actual on-ground performance, based on verified data and expert assessments.

When compared with The Week-Hansa Research Survey 2025, the India Today-MDRA Best Colleges of India 2025 rankings present a more expansive picture, covering 14 streams with extensive city-wise and region-wise data — making it the most comprehensive college survey in India today. The introduction of categories like Best Colleges for BA Political Science, BSc Botany etc., and city/regional rankings is a welcome move, helping aspirants make more informed, subject-specific decisions.

However, the addition of “Most Improved Colleges” raises some questions — a few selections seem debatable and leave room for doubt whether they truly reflect academic progress or if there are commercial (advertising) considerations involved. While we cannot independently verify these claims, we leave it to readers to form their own judgment. Though both India Today and The Week surveys offer valuable insights, readers should remember that no ranking is absolute — methodologies vary, and rankings should be treated as useful guides, but not the sole factor in deciding on a college.
