Student Buzz: Real Talk on Social Media about Development Studies Course at NIT Rourkela
Mixed Signals
Student reviews of NIT Rourkela’s M.A. in Development Studies reveal a sharply divided picture of the program. A critical post on Quora warns aspirants against choosing NITR for humanities, citing low visibility of the department, limited placement support, and academic stress, especially for those from non-technical backgrounds. According to the post, students may find it difficult to balance coursework with competitive exam preparation and may have to rely heavily on personal motivation.
However, a contrasting review from a current student presents a more optimistic narrative, highlighting the diverse academic specializations of the faculty, strong mentoring culture, and active research ecosystem, including two Centers of Excellence supported by the Government of India and UNICEF. The student also noted quality thesis work, international publications, and impressive internships at institutions like IITs, IISc, NUS, and NITI Aayog.
While formal placements remain limited, off-campus opportunities and higher studies appear promising, with alumni working in organizations like TISS, NIRD, Piramal Foundation, and pursuing PhDs at global and Indian institutions.
Bottom line: For those driven by research, social sector work, or civil service ambitions, the program offers solid academic grounding and networking. But aspirants seeking immediate placements or lighter academic load may need to weigh their options carefully.
