About UM-DAE CEBS PhD Program 2025
The University of Mumbai – Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS), established in 2007, is an aided institution under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. Located at the Kalina campus of the University of Mumbai, the Centre offers world-class research facilities, dynamic academic atmosphere, and strong collaborations with leading research institutes. It offers a multi-disciplinary Ph.D. program addressing both fundamental and societally relevant scientific challenges.
Programmes Offered
UM-DAE CEBS invites applications for full-time Ph.D. programs in the following Schools:

Eligibility
- M.Sc. in the relevant subject area with at least 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grade.
- 5% relaxation for SC/ST/Divyangjan candidates.
- Age Limit:
- Maximum 28 years as on 1 August 2025.
- Relaxation: OBC-NCL (3 years), SC/ST (5 years), Divyangjan (10 years).
- Mandatory Qualification: UGC-CSIR-NET (JRF or LS)/SLET/GATE/NBHM/JEST/DBT-BET/DST-INSPIRE/PET (University of Mumbai)/Teachers’ Fellowship.
- Nationality: Indian nationals only.
- Reservation as per Government of India norms.
Selection Procedure
- Scrutiny of applications based on eligibility.
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited for written test and/or interview.
- Final selection will be based on merit list prepared after test/interview by the Selection Committee.
- Selection Committee’s decision will be final.
Fellowship and Tenure
For UM-DAE CEBS PhD Program 2025 Only
- Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) by UM-DAE CEBS:
- Rs. 37,000 per month + HRA @30% (first two years)
- Rs. 42,000 per month + HRA @30% (third year onwards as SRF)
- Contingency grant of Rs. 60,000 per year
- Candidates may also activate their independent fellowship from DBT, DST, etc.
Accommodation
- Limited shared hostel accommodation available for 1st year (3 male + 3 female seats).
- Available only for students from outside Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
- Allotment will be based on merit.

Note: Incomplete or incorrect applications will be rejected. No correction allowed after submission.
Travel Allowance
- AC-III railway fare (both ways) for interview candidates on submission of original tickets.
Medical Insurance
- Selected candidates must join the Group Health Insurance Scheme upon admission.
